Next New Wave Young Filmmakers Workshop returns this year to further focus on nurturing young and emerging filmmakers in Malaysia. Set on 19th to 26th August 2016, the workshop will feature 6 prominent mentors from Southeast Asia to guide 14 selected participants in a span of 8 days.

An initiative by FINAS, Next New Wave was founded in 2015 to help cultivate the spirit of experimentation and perspective amongst emerging filmmakers. One of the organization’s main objectives is the emphasis on Southeast Asian collaboration; exposing young Malaysian filmmakers to films from the region and also bringing in Southeast Asian established filmmakers as mentors to share their experiences.

Application is now open for this year’s edition and aspiring filmmakers must be a Malaysian citizen below 25 years old with experience in making at least two short films or documentaries. Fourteen shortlisted participants will be announced on 15th August 2016, and they will be divided into two teams to produce one short film by the end of the workshop. At the end of the workshop, 2 chosen participants will represent Malaysia at the 2016 ASEAN­-ROK FLY workshop held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from 31st October to 13th of November.

Last year, FINAS had organised the first Young Filmmakers Workshop supported by the Next New Wave and the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM). The 8-day workshop was participated by 21 new local filmmakers and 5 mentors from Southeast Asia.

Eligibility:

1) A Malaysian citizen

2) Born between 1991 - 2000

3) Experienced in making at least TWO short film or documentary

4) Had not participated in Asian Film Academy or ASEAN-ROK FLY Workshop

5) Available for workshops participation 19-26 August 2016 and 31 October - 13 November 2016

6) No disqualifications to travel abroad

Please prepare the following submission materials before filling-up this form:

1. Online video link of a self introduction video below one minute and subtitled in English

2. Online video link of a short film or documentary you participated as producer, director, cinematographer, editor, or sound

3. Letter of Motivation, self-introduction in relation to film work and career plans in film industry in not more than 500 words.

The selection result shall be announced on 15 August 2016.
